Family Fun Activities at Downtown Disney

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 10/03/2011

If you are planning a trip to Orlando, be sure not to miss Downtown Disney. It's the restaurant and shopping district in Walt Disney World. It doesn't cost anything to enter or park there and it offers much more family fun in Orlando than many people realize. There are a lot of free or inexpensive activities for the kids to do while their parents shop.

Free Fun Activities

There is a Lego store at Downtown Disney that offers free Lego building activities. The kids can play with Legos or walk around and look at the large Lego sculptures. This shop is especially fun for kids because they offer a free building project that the kids can take home. Just check at their guest services desk to see when they will be offering this activity during your trip.

Water Playgrounds

The water playgrounds are probably the most popular activity for family fun in Orlando. If you are planning on letting your children enjoy this activity, be sure to bring your child's swimsuit and water shoes. The water playgrounds are actually fountains that are built into the sidewalk and squirt water randomly up through the cement. The kids love to run through them to see if they can get across the space without getting wet. This could keep your kids busy for hours on a hot day.

There is also a small train and carousel at Downtown Disney, but there are small fees for these activities. These rides are best suited for toddlers or preschool age children.

If you are looking for family fun in Orlando, be sure to stop by Downtown Disney. Even if you are not interested in shopping or eating at the restaurants, there are plenty of free things for your kids to see and do.

Visit OrlandoTravelHotels.com to plan your family's visit to Orlando.  You'll find great fares on flights and guaranteed rates on hotel rooms.  Make plans to see all Orlando has to offer and get here at a great price!

Three Amazing Day Trips to Take from Orlando

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 08/15/2011

Orlando is a vibrant and fascinating city, but it's best known for its theme parks. For some, they can be overwhelming or one may just desire to get away from the city for a little while. Day trips can be an inexpensive way to inject some adventure into the daily routine without jetting off on an expensive vacation.

The area surrounding Orlando is brimming with fun and interesting outings for those looking to get away for the day.

Spend the Day with Astronauts

Less than an hour from Orlando is Titusville, where Floridians can get a taste of the life of an astronaut. This town has offered some of the best views of a shuttle launch. Even if it is not launch day, head over to the Kennedy Space Center to take a tour. This is the best way to learn about NASA and the astronauts.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park in Gainesville has fascinated curious tourists since the 1880s. This bowl-shaped hole in the earth leads to a rainforest and sinkhole. Small streams trickle down into the chasm where researchers have found fossilized marine life and continue to learn about the pre-historic world. Visitors to the park can hike through the lush forests, enjoy a picnic, and learn more about the sink hole through various displays at the park.

Florida’s Peaceful Beach

Flagler Beach sits on an island between the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway not far from Orlando. The town is popular with fisherman and those who enjoy a good farmer’s market. The charming town offers relaxation to anyone looking to escape city life for the day.

Day trips are a fantastic way to let go of stress and enjoy the area outside of town. Certainly, Orlando has a lot to offer, but sometimes it is necessary to just set out and discover something new.

Visit OrlandoTravelHotels.com to plan your trip in and around Orlando or all over the great Sunshine State.  You'll find guaranteed low prices on hotel rooms and great deals on flights, rental cars and more.  Use OrlandoTravelHotels.com to learn more about wonderful day trips originating from Orlando.

Which Disney Water Park Should We Choose?

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 08/02/2011

When you are looking for a bit of family fun, you cannot beat the water parks in Orlando. Many people choose a Disney vacation, but will only have time to visit one water park and are unsure as to which one to choose. There are two different water parks at Walt Disney World in Orlando; Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

Both water parks have lots of fun slides and a lazy river. They both have play areas for younger children and plenty of activities. It can be difficult to decide between the two, but if you take a closer look at some of their main features, it makes the decision a little easier.

Typhoon Lagoon

One of the most unique water parks in Orlando is Typhoon Lagoon. Typhoon Lagoon has an attraction in which you can snorkel with the sharks and other saltwater fish called Shark Reef. Another unique attraction is the Crush 'n' Gusher, which is a roller coaster type water ride that is popular with both kids and adults.

Blizzard Beach

Blizzard Beach offers more thrill rides and is more popular with the teenage crowd. It has one of the highest water slides in the world called Summit Plummit. Blizzard Beach is fashioned after a ski theme and has a chair lift that takes you to the top of several different slides. One particularly fun family ride is Teamboat Springs, which will allow your whole family to ride together in a raft that holds up to six people.

There are other water parks in Orlando, but these are two of the most popular. No matter which one of the water parks in Orlando you choose, be sure to bring your sunscreen and lots of energy. Your family will have a great time at any of the water parks.

Beat the Heat

Beat the heat and plan a trip to one of Orlando's great water parks.  OrlandoTravelHotels.com offers you a convenient way to make your travel arrangements and find guaranteed low rates on hotel rooms.  Book your flight at the same time as your hotel room and save an average of $525.  Slide into Orlando at a great price and visit all of the attractions in the area.

The Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 03/28/2011

I’ve lived in Orlando a long time and I guess there’s so much to do here, some things just slip by you.  I wasn’t aware of The Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom until recently and it is quite fascinating.

Whether or not you are a history buff, The Hall of Presidents is so much more than just a lesson on past presidents.  Walt Disney Imagineering created a robotics form called audio-animatronics.  This allows the presidents to come to life with movements and sounds.

Hear Famous Presidential Speeches and More

This multi-media presentation includes President Obama giving the presidential oath, a musical score composed and conducted by Emmy winner Joel McNeely, films, painting, and more.

You will hear the familiar voice of Morgan Freeman as he narrates the presentation and the introduction of each president is made.  Hear famous speeches made by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

I found the movements from the figures on stage simply amazing.  You’ll see the presidents turn and speak to each other and perform familiar gestures.  I was particularly struck by how much the gestures of President Obama were reflected in the audio-animatronics likeness of him.

I simply had missed this wonderful attraction at Magic Kingdom and I’m so glad I ran across it.  You should definitely take time to view this incredible and life-like performance on your visit to Disney World.

Survey Says, Orlando #1 Spring Break Destination for 2011

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 03/17/2011

First, Orlando surpassed Las Vegas as the top tourist destination and now Orlando has dethroned Vegas in another category, Most Popular Spring Break Travel Destination for 2011.  These results are according to an Orbitz survey.

Last year, Orlando ranked #5 so it looks like it wasn’t just Las Vegas that was surpassed.  Perhaps Orlando came out tops in this survey because it is a family-friendly location.  Not all Spring break travelers are college kids looking for the next beach keg party. In fact, the survey indicates 88% of the respondents try to avoid popular Spring break locations for the college-age group.

The fact is, four Florida locations ended up in the top ten of this list.  Of course, Miami/Fort Lauderdale made it, but Fort Myers and Tampa also are hot destinations this Spring break.

If Orlando Doesn’t Have It, It’s Close By

Orlando pretty much has it all.  You can find the world’s greatest theme parks, sporting venues, recreational opportunities, and oh yeah, you are within easy driving distance to beaches not just the Atlantic Ocean, but the Gulf of Mexico too.  Pick your beautiful poison on this one.

Many cruise lines call Port Canaveral home and you can fly into Orlando International Airport and catch a shuttle over to set sail for an exotic location.  Check out the newest ship in Disney’s fleet, the Disney Dream.  I hear it really is a dream of a ship.

For sports enthusiasts, the Orlando area is home for spring training to many Major League Baseball teams.  The Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees are just a few of the teams you can see play while you are in town.

It’s no wonder that Orlando came out on top in this survey.  There are just so many different things to do and enjoy. Regardless of age, you can have a great time in Orlando -  not just in the Spring, but any time of the year.

Save on Spring Break Travel

Visit OrlandoTravelHotels.com to find savings on all your Spring break travel needs.  Great pricing on hotels, flights, cruises, rental cars, and more are right at your fingertips.  Let OrlandoTravelHotels.com do the work so you can enjoy a relaxing time in Orlando or anywhere else in Florida.

Painting It Green and Yellow at Disney World

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 02/08/2011

Yes, the MVP of Super Bowl XLV (that’s 45 for us non-roman numeral folks) did just what he said he would.  He went to Disney World!  Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers took a ride on a float with Mickey Mouse at Magic Kingdom just 24 hours after steering the Packers to a Super Bowl victory.

Green Bay Puts It On the Steelers

Green Bay topped the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in what was one of the better Super Bowl’s I’ve ever witnessed.  Seeing as I’m a lifelong Packer fan; I was naturally thrilled with the outcome.

Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, racked up 304 yards, and best of all, threw no interceptions.  They key to the game probably came down to the turnovers.  The Pittsburgh Steelers turned the ball over three times.  It’s difficult to overcome that on such a large stage as the Super Bowl.

I’m Going To Disney World

It’s only fitting the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl goes to Disney World the day after the game.  I’m trying to remember the last time the winner didn’t say in the postgame, “I’m going to Disney World!”

So on this day, Aaron Rodgers might have actually upstaged Mickey.  There was plenty of green and yellow on this day at Disney World to celebrate not only the Super Bowl win for the Green Bay Packers, but to celebrate the game’s Most Valuable Player, one Aaron Rodgers.

Congratulations to Both Super Bowl Teams

We at OrlandoTravelHotels.com congratulate the Packers on their win and the Steelers for playing one heck of a game.  You might have missed the parade with Aaron, but you can always find great deals for your trip to Disney World or anywhere else simply by visiting OrlandoTravelHotels.com.  You’ll get fantastic pricing on hotel rooms, flights, and more at one convenient location.  Treat yourself like an MVP and head to Disney World.

Fantasyland – Largest Expansion in Magic Kingdom History

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 01/27/2011

For all you Magic Kingdom lovers, you’ll be pleased to know the Fantasyland project is underway.  Fantasyland is the largest expansion project ever undertaken at Magic Kingdom in Orlando.

Many of the current buildings and attractions will be updated or revamped while there will be many new areas constructed.  The project will open in phases with some areas scheduled to open in 2012 and the remainder in 2013.

Double the Size, Double the Fun

The expansion project will almost double the current size of Fantasyland.  That means you can have twice the amount of fun.

Folks seem to be most excited about the all-new Under the Sea: Journey of The Little Mermaid.  You’ll be entertained on this ride by Ariel and friends while listening to your favorite songs from the animated film.

Other features in the expansion include:

•    The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
•    Additions to Dumbo the Flying Elephant
•    Beast’s Castle
•    Be Our Guest Restaurant
•    Enchanted Tales with Belle
•    Storybook Circus
•    Princess Fairytale Hall

These are just a few of the new or improved experiences you will find when the Fantasyland expansion project is complete.  Nobody does it better than Disney and I can’t wait to see Fantasyland once everything is complete.

Getting to Disney for a Song

Use OrlandoTravelHotels.com to find guaranteed deals on hotel rooms and flights for a song in and out of Orlando.  You’ll save enough money booking your travel through OrlandoTravelHotels.com that you can visit Magic Kingdom before the expanded Fantasyland is complete and after!

Butterbeer™ Mania at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 07/09/2010

Of all the exciting things to do at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios  in Orlando, I wasn’t expecting the buzz to be all about the butterbeer. But there has been butterbeer mania sweeping the land and the internet.  People are wondering what the recipe is and who gets the best mustache after taking a sip?

Butterbeer Recipe

It is reported that butterbeer is the most popular food item at Wizarding World.  But the recipe for the butterbeer served at the theme park is actually a secret and non-alcoholic.  You can find many recipes on the Internet, but the basis for most of them is cream soda.  This gives the drink its frothiness and hence, the mustache on your upper lip upon taking a sip.

Mugglenet.com is a popular web site for all things Harry Potter.  They have listed a recipe  for butterbeer that is just delicious.  And let me add, there is nothing low-fat about it!  You have two choices for butterbeer, draft and frozen.  I’ve only tried the draft but it is just yummy.

Visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and More

Be sure to include a trip to Universal Studios to see the latest craze of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  But Orlando has so much to see, you should definitely plan enough time to see the area.

You can find up to 65% savings on already discounted prices on hotels  and flightsBook your flight and hotel accommodations  at the same time and save an average of $525 when making your reservations through OrlandoTravelHotels.com , one of Orlando’s premier travel services.

Top 5 Things to Do at Islands of Adventure in Orlando

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 06/10/2010

Of course there are more than 5 things to do at Islands of Adventure but I thought I’d share with you my top 5.

  1. Doctor Doom’s Fearfall – I love a free fall!  Put me on a Ferris wheel, and I will hurl for sure. But Doctor Doom offers a soaring ride upwards and a free fall that gives me such a rush.  It’s pretty scary so I wouldn’t recommend it for the faint at heart.
  2. Jurassic Park River Adventure – I love to get wet!  Ride the river in a raft and see all sorts of dinosaurs and take a mighty big plunge to escape the jaws of T-Rex.
  3. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man – I love the 3-D! The 3-D effects of this ride truly are amazing.  Many believe this ride set the standard for theme park rides.
  4. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit – I love fast! This rollercoaster hits it up to 65 mph.  My two favorite parts of the ride are the loop and the fact that I get to choose my own soundtrack to listen to during the ride.
  5. The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad – I love fireworks!  This live action show is full of explosive fireworks and death – defying stunts.

Even if you don’t like rides, there are so many shows and other fun activities to see.  I can’t wait for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to open on June 18th.  It will be just one more fantastic event at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

What’s your favorite thing about Islands of Adventure? Leave me a comment!

Enjoy an average savings of $535 when you book your flight and hotel at the same time through OrlandoTravelHotels.com.  You’ll find great deals on all your travel needs at OrlandoTravelHotels.com.

M is for Mickey, Minnie, and Magic Kingdom

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 05/13/2010

There really is no place like Magic Kingdom.  It’s where all of our favorite Disney characters come to life.  It is a land of enchantment and a place full of entertainment and attractions.  Magic Kingdom is probably the most popular of Walt Disney World’s theme parks  and once you visit, you will understand why.

It’s a Small World

Magic Kingdom spans across 107 acres but it feels like a small magical world once you enter the gates.  From the time you see Cinderella’s castle, you will find yourself surrounded by your favorite Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White, Ariel, and many more.

What’s Your Favorite at Magic Kingdom?

My parents took me to Magic Kingdom the first year it opened.  It was my first airplane ride and probably, my most memorable childhood experience.  I have been many times since then and my favorite thing is still the Cinderella Castle.  What is your favorite thing about Magic Kingdom?  I would love to hear your stories of visiting there.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

If you are one of those people who loves roller coasters, don’t pass up the chance to ride the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Orlando.  Rockit opened late last year and has received rave reviews from roller coaster enthusiasts.

Rockit Uses Ground-Breaking Roller Coaster Technology

A friend of mine and her son road it last week and said it was one of the best and certainly, most unique, roller coasters they have ever ridden.  It has the world’s largest non-inverted loop and spiraling, negative-gravity move. Reaching 65 mph and stretching over 17 stories tall in spots, you will have the ride of a lifetime.

You can even pick out the music of your choice from your very own touchpad at your seat.  Your ride is videotaped so you will have a truly visual memory of your experience.  Get the thrill of some “first-ever” roller coaster technology on the wild and crazy Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Orlando. Check out all the fun at the Orlando theme parks  at Walt Disney World.
