Family Fun Activities at Downtown Disney

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 10/03/2011

If you are planning a trip to Orlando, be sure not to miss Downtown Disney. It's the restaurant and shopping district in Walt Disney World. It doesn't cost anything to enter or park there and it offers much more family fun in Orlando than many people realize. There are a lot of free or inexpensive activities for the kids to do while their parents shop.

Free Fun Activities

There is a Lego store at Downtown Disney that offers free Lego building activities. The kids can play with Legos or walk around and look at the large Lego sculptures. This shop is especially fun for kids because they offer a free building project that the kids can take home. Just check at their guest services desk to see when they will be offering this activity during your trip.

Water Playgrounds

The water playgrounds are probably the most popular activity for family fun in Orlando. If you are planning on letting your children enjoy this activity, be sure to bring your child's swimsuit and water shoes. The water playgrounds are actually fountains that are built into the sidewalk and squirt water randomly up through the cement. The kids love to run through them to see if they can get across the space without getting wet. This could keep your kids busy for hours on a hot day.

There is also a small train and carousel at Downtown Disney, but there are small fees for these activities. These rides are best suited for toddlers or preschool age children.

If you are looking for family fun in Orlando, be sure to stop by Downtown Disney. Even if you are not interested in shopping or eating at the restaurants, there are plenty of free things for your kids to see and do.

Three Amazing Day Trips to Take from Orlando

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 08/15/2011

Orlando is a vibrant and fascinating city, but it's best known for its theme parks. For some, they can be overwhelming or one may just desire to get away from the city for a little while. Day trips can be an inexpensive way to inject some adventure into the daily routine without jetting off on an expensive vacation.

The area surrounding Orlando is brimming with fun and interesting outings for those looking to get away for the day.

Spend the Day with Astronauts

Less than an hour from Orlando is Titusville, where Floridians can get a taste of the life of an astronaut. This town has offered some of the best views of a shuttle launch. Even if it is not launch day, head over to the Kennedy Space Center to take a tour. This is the best way to learn about NASA and the astronauts.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park in Gainesville has fascinated curious tourists since the 1880s. This bowl-shaped hole in the earth leads to a rainforest and sinkhole. Small streams trickle down into the chasm where researchers have found fossilized marine life and continue to learn about the pre-historic world. Visitors to the park can hike through the lush forests, enjoy a picnic, and learn more about the sink hole through various displays at the park.

Florida’s Peaceful Beach

Flagler Beach sits on an island between the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway not far from Orlando. The town is popular with fisherman and those who enjoy a good farmer’s market. The charming town offers relaxation to anyone looking to escape city life for the day.

Day trips are a fantastic way to let go of stress and enjoy the area outside of town. Certainly, Orlando has a lot to offer, but sometimes it is necessary to just set out and discover something new.

Visit OrlandoTravelHotels.com to plan your trip in and around Orlando or all over the great Sunshine State.  You'll find guaranteed low prices on hotel rooms and great deals on flights, rental cars and more.  Use OrlandoTravelHotels.com to learn more about wonderful day trips originating from Orlando.

Which Disney Water Park Should We Choose?

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 08/02/2011

When you are looking for a bit of family fun, you cannot beat the water parks in Orlando. Many people choose a Disney vacation, but will only have time to visit one water park and are unsure as to which one to choose. There are two different water parks at Walt Disney World in Orlando; Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

Both water parks have lots of fun slides and a lazy river. They both have play areas for younger children and plenty of activities. It can be difficult to decide between the two, but if you take a closer look at some of their main features, it makes the decision a little easier.

Typhoon Lagoon

One of the most unique water parks in Orlando is Typhoon Lagoon. Typhoon Lagoon has an attraction in which you can snorkel with the sharks and other saltwater fish called Shark Reef. Another unique attraction is the Crush 'n' Gusher, which is a roller coaster type water ride that is popular with both kids and adults.

Blizzard Beach

Blizzard Beach offers more thrill rides and is more popular with the teenage crowd. It has one of the highest water slides in the world called Summit Plummit. Blizzard Beach is fashioned after a ski theme and has a chair lift that takes you to the top of several different slides. One particularly fun family ride is Teamboat Springs, which will allow your whole family to ride together in a raft that holds up to six people.

There are other water parks in Orlando, but these are two of the most popular. No matter which one of the water parks in Orlando you choose, be sure to bring your sunscreen and lots of energy. Your family will have a great time at any of the water parks.

Beat the Heat

Beat the heat and plan a trip to one of Orlando's great water parks.  OrlandoTravelHotels.com offers you a convenient way to make your travel arrangements and find guaranteed low rates on hotel rooms.  Book your flight at the same time as your hotel room and save an average of $525.  Slide into Orlando at a great price and visit all of the attractions in the area.

Survey Says, Orlando #1 Spring Break Destination for 2011

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 03/17/2011

First, Orlando surpassed Las Vegas as the top tourist destination and now Orlando has dethroned Vegas in another category, Most Popular Spring Break Travel Destination for 2011.  These results are according to an Orbitz survey.

Last year, Orlando ranked #5 so it looks like it wasn’t just Las Vegas that was surpassed.  Perhaps Orlando came out tops in this survey because it is a family-friendly location.  Not all Spring break travelers are college kids looking for the next beach keg party. In fact, the survey indicates 88% of the respondents try to avoid popular Spring break locations for the college-age group.

The fact is, four Florida locations ended up in the top ten of this list.  Of course, Miami/Fort Lauderdale made it, but Fort Myers and Tampa also are hot destinations this Spring break.

If Orlando Doesn’t Have It, It’s Close By

Orlando pretty much has it all.  You can find the world’s greatest theme parks, sporting venues, recreational opportunities, and oh yeah, you are within easy driving distance to beaches not just the Atlantic Ocean, but the Gulf of Mexico too.  Pick your beautiful poison on this one.

Many cruise lines call Port Canaveral home and you can fly into Orlando International Airport and catch a shuttle over to set sail for an exotic location.  Check out the newest ship in Disney’s fleet, the Disney Dream.  I hear it really is a dream of a ship.

For sports enthusiasts, the Orlando area is home for spring training to many Major League Baseball teams.  The Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees are just a few of the teams you can see play while you are in town.

It’s no wonder that Orlando came out on top in this survey.  There are just so many different things to do and enjoy. Regardless of age, you can have a great time in Orlando -  not just in the Spring, but any time of the year.

Save on Spring Break Travel

Visit OrlandoTravelHotels.com to find savings on all your Spring break travel needs.  Great pricing on hotels, flights, cruises, rental cars, and more are right at your fingertips.  Let OrlandoTravelHotels.com do the work so you can enjoy a relaxing time in Orlando or anywhere else in Florida.

Large-Scale Talent in a Quaint Setting

I think one of my favorite things about the festival is its location.  Winter Park is a quaint city with brick-lined streets and the festival is held at Central Park, smack dab in the center of town.

Not only can you enjoy and purchase some great artwork, you can choose from delicious food offerings and hear some fantastic live music.  If you’ve never gone to the Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival, check it out if you’re in town March 18-20, 2011.  You’ll probably find yourself becoming like me, a fan who looks forward to attending every year.

That’s right, start your engines as we head into the final Speedweeks and the Daytona 500 race.  The actual race is Sunday, February 20, 2011, but there are lots of activities leading up to the race.

The Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing

The Daytona 500 is at times alternately referred to as “The Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing” or “The Great American Race”.  There’s no doubt these are appropriate titles for this race.

You’ll see some of your favorite racers in what promises to be another thrilling Daytona 500.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon secured the front row starting spots during the qualifying race.  You’ll also see crowd favorites Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Bill Elliott, and many others as 43 of the most-electrifying drivers vie for this coveted championship win.

Daytona is located in close proximity of Orlando.  Many fans fly into Orlando International Airport and take the short drive over to Daytona for pre-race events and the final race on Sunday.

Zip over to OrlandoTravelHotels.com to make your flight and hotel reservations online. You’ll find hotels rooms on sale, some as much as 65% off already discounted prices.

Check Out the Nightlife on Church Street in Orlando

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 12/21/2010

What began as a railroad station in the late 1800’s is now a must-do stop in the Orlando nightlife circuit.  Church Street Station is located in downtown Orlando and you will definitely need to check it out while you are in town.

5 Great Orlando Bars

Church Street Station has a lot to offer in entertainment but the main draw is the nightlife and nightclubs.

•    Antigua – the interior design is sleek and the atmosphere is nothing but high energy.  VIP areas are offered and they have different bars conveniently located throughout the club.

•    Big Belly – it has a feel of a favorite watering hole.  Dance on the floor or on the pole to music spun by the DJ.  Big Belly also has some great sandwiches and burgers.

•    Chillers – definitely a party bar along the Key West style.  It’s a fun, laid-back bar specializing in frozen drinks.  You’ll be hard pressed to find a tastier daiquiri.

•     Latitudes – a rooftop bar that allows you to see the Orlando skyline.  The tropical atmosphere makes it a great place to kick back and enjoy the great drink specials they offer.

•    Rok Room – a newcomer to Church Street nightlife, it’s the newest rock bar in town with an ultra lounge feel.

Orlando offers some really great nightlife.  Don’t use up all that energy at the theme parks; save some to party down at one of the clubs on Church Street.  There are awesome hotels in the area, fantastic restaurant options, and it’s a stone’s throw from the amazing new Amway Center.

Make all your travel arrangements at OrlandoTravelHotels.com.  You’ll find guaranteed pricing on hotel rooms and you can save even more when you book your flight at the same time.  Enjoy all Orlando has to offer including the great nightclubs at Church Street Station.

Catch the Polar Express at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 12/14/2010

You won’t find a better backdrop for a holiday movie than the beautiful grounds of Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando.  Bring the family to Leu Gardens on December 17, 2010 and enjoy an outdoor showing of Polar Express.  The Gardens open at 6:00 pm and the movie begins at 7:30 pm.

Is There Really a Santa Claus?

Polar Express is based on the popular children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg.  Board the train with a doubting 8-year old boy and travel to the North Pole to find out if Santa Claus really exists.  Tom Hanks stars in the movie.

Leu Gardens is a hot ticket in town not only for its beautiful gardens, but its special events like outdoor movie nights.  Bring your blankets, chairs, a picnic basket and watch the movie under the stars with family and friends.

An outdoor movie night at Leu Gardens is just one of the fun things to do in Orlando.  The holiday season in Orlando is filled with special events.  Be sure not to miss a seasonal favorite in Polar Express as you make your list of holiday activities.

America’s Got Talent in Orlando Florida

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 11/02/2010

I’m not much of a reality television series kind of gal, but I must say I got hooked on this year’s season of America’s Got Talent.  My obsession was due mainly to the sensational singing of 10-year old Jackie Evancho.

I couldn’t believe that amazing voice came from such a young person.  Jackie didn’t win in the end, but I get to see her and other finalists on November 7, 2010 at Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando.

See AGT Winner Michael Grimm and Other Finalists

Michael Grimm was the ultimate winner of this year’s America’s Got Talent and boy does he.  He’s multi-talented as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist.  The live tour is hosted by Jerry Springer and fortunately, there will be no chair throwing events at this concert.

You will see many of this year’s favorites including 12- year-old ballroom dancing partners Anna and Patryk, singing sisters Christina & Ali, stunt bike rider Jeremy VanSchoonhoven, magician/illusionist Michael Grasso, opera singer Prince Poppycock, performance troupe Fighting Gravity, hometown dance troupe Studio One Young Beast Society, and pop singer/musician Taylor Mathews.

Enjoy a Wide Range of Talent

I think what I like most about America’s Got Talent is there is a little bit of something for everyone.  While I definitely had my favorites, I certainly enjoyed all of those who made it into the finals.  You won’t be disappointed with any of the acts on the live tour.

Save on Orlando Travel

While there has been a decrease in the mortality rate over the last 40 years, it is important to be proactive in looking for signs of breast cancer through yearly physicals or mammograms and monthly self-examinations.

Five Free Fun Outings in Orlando

Posted by: Travel Expert Posted Date: 07/29/2010

Free Activities in OrlandoIt’s no secret that Orlando is a top tourist destination.  There are so many things to do  but it can get quite expensive with all the admission fees to theme parks  and water parks .  What many folks fail to realize is there are lots of activities, attractions and recreational opportunities in Orlando that won’t cost you one cent to get into.

Our Top 5 Free Activities

The weather is one of my favorite things about Orlando.  Even with the summer showers, there is plenty of sunshine on most every day to get out and do something fun.  Here is a list of our 5 favorite free things to do in Orlando:

1.    Lake Eola Park  – located in downtown Orlando, this is one of our favorite outdoor locations.  We love to picnic there and stroll around the lake.  Sometimes you can catch free flea markets, art exhibits, and concerts being held on the grounds.  While there are paid activities there such as paddle boats, it won’t cost you a dime to feed the beautiful swans who call Lake Eola home.

2.    Harry P. Leu Gardens  – if you find yourself in Orlando on the first Monday of any month, you can get in free to see one of the true gems of the city.  The foliage is just beautiful and Leu Gardens is home to the largest formal rose garden in Florida as well as the largest collection of camellias outside of California.

3.    Old Town
  – this nifty location has unique shopping, dining, and rides but it’s a great place to just stroll around.  You can also catch lots of free band performances, car shows, etc. throughout the week and weekend.

4.    Central Park  – this is a lovely area set in the middle of Winter Park.  The host lots of free events during the year including the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival.  The park is alive with water features and beautiful plants and trees.  Take a picnic and then stroll down the brick-paved streets to see lots of unique shops.

5.    The Albin Polasek Sculpture Gardens  – also located in Winter Park on Lake Osceola, this 3 acre garden dates back to 1949.  Many of the plantings were originally placed by renowned artist Albin Polasek.  There is a fee to enter the museum to view Mr. Polasek’s work but admission to the garden is free.

Butterbeer™ Mania at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 07/09/2010

Of all the exciting things to do at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios  in Orlando, I wasn’t expecting the buzz to be all about the butterbeer. But there has been butterbeer mania sweeping the land and the internet.  People are wondering what the recipe is and who gets the best mustache after taking a sip?

Butterbeer Recipe

It is reported that butterbeer is the most popular food item at Wizarding World.  But the recipe for the butterbeer served at the theme park is actually a secret and non-alcoholic.  You can find many recipes on the Internet, but the basis for most of them is cream soda.  This gives the drink its frothiness and hence, the mustache on your upper lip upon taking a sip.

Mugglenet.com is a popular web site for all things Harry Potter.  They have listed a recipe  for butterbeer that is just delicious.  And let me add, there is nothing low-fat about it!  You have two choices for butterbeer, draft and frozen.  I’ve only tried the draft but it is just yummy.

Visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and More

Be sure to include a trip to Universal Studios to see the latest craze of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  But Orlando has so much to see, you should definitely plan enough time to see the area.

You can find up to 65% savings on already discounted prices on hotels  and flightsBook your flight and hotel accommodations  at the same time and save an average of $525 when making your reservations through OrlandoTravelHotels.com , one of Orlando’s premier travel services.

Busch Gardens is Straight Out of Africa

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 07/08/2010

Busch Gardens  has a little bit of everything.  Maybe that’s one of the reasons it is one of the more popular attractions in Central Florida.  Located just an hour from Orlando in Tampa Bay, Busch Gardens can make a great day trip  from Orlando or a destination for a few days of vacation.

Rides, Rhinos, and Restaurants

I think one of the most amazing things about Busch Gardens is the number and range of exotic animals that call it home.  Interacting with animals ranging from Bengal tigers to rhinos, you will feel as though you are in the middle of an African safari.

Busch Gardens has thrilling rides and many opportunities for animal interactions.  My favorite ride is SheiKra, the floorless rollercoaster, but you will find all sorts of rides to meet varying levels of daredevilry.

Jungala offers the opportunity for up-close interactions with beautiful animals as well as a ride through the rainforest.  There is no doubt all the exhilaration created with a trip to Busch Gardens will leave you with quite the appetite.  Have no fear because you will have many restaurant  options to keep your energy level up.

Memories of a Lifetime

There is little doubt that you will be able to create memories of a lifetime with a visit to Busch Gardens.  Take advantage of unbeatable savings  on flights  and hotel  accommodations in the Central Florida area by booking your travel through OrlandoTravelHotels.com .  You can find hotels conveniently located to Bush Gardens or anywhere else for that matter.  Book your travel  now and see all the Busch Gardens has to offer.

You Can find it All at Thornton Park in Orlando

Posted by: Amy, Travel Guide Posted Date: 04/22/2010

Thornton Park is probably my most favorite area of Orlando.  I love the brick-paved streets, the cool shopping , and the great restaurants .  It’s also located next to Lake Eola, one of the prettiest parks  and open air spaces in all of Orlando.

Classic Yet Trendy Orlando Neighborhood

Thornton Park is a mixed use development and is centered around one of those wonderful old Orlando neighborhoods with beautiful homes and architecture.  People traveling to Orlando love to visit Thornton Park.  There are plenty of hotels  within walking distance and the area is hopping with nightlife  and outdoor activities.

I am an animal lover and Thornton Park is one of those great animal-friendly locations.  You will find watering bowls outside of restaurants and shops to make sure Fido doesn’t get thirsty from your fun-filled time in the neighborhood.
